Designing an Experimental Variation to Test Motivations

A researcher is studying a one-shot bargaining game where a 'Proposer' offers a split of $100 to a 'Responder'. If the Responder rejects the offer, neither person gets any money. The researcher hypothesizes that Proposers make generous offers primarily due to a strategic fear of rejection, rather than an intrinsic preference for fairness. Design a modification to this experiment that could isolate and test the Proposer's intrinsic preference for fairness, separate from their strategic fear of rejection. Explain what results from your modified experiment would support the researcher's hypothesis.
