Determinants of a Union's Bargaining Strength

A union's bargaining power is derived from its capacity to effectively withhold labor from the employer. The strength of this power is significantly increased if the union can guarantee that no other workers will be available to take the place of striking employees, thereby making the strike's impact on the firm more severe.
