Development of Illness Anxiety Disorder
There are two main existing theories regarding the development of IAD:
- Cognitive-behavioral model (most supported): People misinterpret normal bodily sensations as serious illness → Leads to catastrophic thinking → Results in behaviors like excessive reassurance-seeking, symptom googling, and avoidance. Strongly supported by research.
- Interpersonal model (less tested): Health anxiety stems from insecure attachment in early childhood → Individuals seek reassurance and care through physical symptom complaints. Aims to reduce underlying feelings of insecurity. Has less empirical support so far.
