Developmental State Failures

While East Asian economies are often cited as successful examples, many attempts to implement the developmental state model elsewhere have failed. In numerous cases, state intervention has led not to rapid growth but to cronyism, inefficient state-owned enterprises, and significant public debt. These failures often occur when the necessary conditions, such as a competent and autonomous bureaucracy, are absent, allowing political connections rather than economic performance to dictate the allocation of resources.
