Risks and Criticisms of the Developmental State Model

The developmental state model is subject to significant criticisms. A primary risk is government failure, where officials may 'pick losers' by supporting inefficient industries due to imperfect information or political pressure. This intervention can also create opportunities for corruption and rent-seeking, where politically connected firms benefit at the public's expense. Furthermore, heavy state guidance can distort market signals, leading to resource misallocation and stifling private sector innovation.
