Difficulty of Substituting US Cotton During the American Civil War

The interruption of cotton exports from the United States to Britain during the American Civil War highlighted the significant challenges in sourcing alternative supplies. Despite turning to other regions such as Egypt and India, the British textile industry found it extremely difficult to replace the volume and type of cotton previously supplied by the US.
