Discussion: Characteristics and outcome of pregnant women admitted to hospital with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection in UK: national population based cohort study
Of the admitted women in the UK who were pregnant with positive SARS-CoV-2 infection:
- 1 in 10 women needed respiratory support
- 1 in 100 women died
- more than half of the women were minorities which suggests that minorities may have a high risk of infection, severe disease or both
- 70% were overweight or obese
- One third had preexisting comorbidities
- 40% were 35 years of age and older
Of the women that gave birth:
- 12% of births were preterm due to the respiratory compromise of them mother
- 1 in 20 of their infants were positive for SARS-CoV-2
Limitations:
- no pregnancy outcomes for women admitted than discharged during the study
- no information on asymptomatic infection
- no daily indication of clinical conditions or other test results performed over the study
Overall the data collected suggests that most of the pregnant women do not have severe illness and transmission of the infection to infants is a possible but rare occurrence
