Disparity in Research Focus Across Sensory Modalities
While all sensory modalities are crucial for interacting with the environment, researchers have historically dedicated significantly more attention to vision and hearing than to other senses. Consequently, although there is still much to learn about how all sensory systems operate, scientific understanding of vision and hearing is far more advanced than that of the chemical senses (taste and smell) and the body senses (touch, temperature, pain, balance, and body position).
