In this supplication (munajat) from Jami's Yusof va Zoleykha, the poet frames the relationship between divine guidance and human effort. God brought humanity from nothingness into being, raised it from ignorance (nadani) to knowledge (danai), and sent down a clear scripture of command and prohibition. Yet human beings mixed good with evil, swung between excess (ifrat) and deficiency (tafrit), neglected what was commanded, and pressed on with what was forbidden. Jami stresses that although the light of guidance is never withheld by God, it bears no fruit while the seeker makes no effort. Crucially, even striving (kushish) cannot arise from the self alone: the poet cries out over his own failure to strive and begs for tawfiq, the divine enabling grace that alone makes effort possible ('بده توفیق کوشش تا بکوشیم'). The concept thus links human helplessness (ajz) to the specific doctrine that the very capacity to obey and to strive is itself a gift from God.
