خداوندا ز هستی ساده بودیم
ز بیم نیستی آزاده بودیم

نخست از نیست ما را هست کردی
به قید آب و گل پابست کردی

ز ضعف ناتوانایی رهاندی
ز نادانی به دانایی رساندی

فرستادی به ما روشن کتابی
به امر و نهی فرمودی خطابی

میان نیک و بد تخلیط کردیم
گهی افراط و گه تفریط کردیم

ره فرمودنی ها کم سپردیم
به نافرمودنی ها پا فشردیم

تو نگذشتی ز دستور عنایت
نپوشیدی ز ما نور هدایت

بر آن نور از تو گیرم پوششی نیست
چه حاصل زان چو از ما کوششی نیست

ز ناکوشیدن خود در خروشیم
بده توفیق کوشش تا بکوشیم

چو دانا همچو نادان گشته غرق است
ز دانش تا به نادانی چه فرق است

ز دستان های نفس ناخوش آهنگ
مکن بر ما ره حسن عمل تنگ

در آن تنگی که ما باشیم و آهی
ز رحمت سوی ما بگشای راهی

ازان ره خوان سوی درگاه ما را
به ایمان بر برون همراه ما را

English translation

O Lord, we were devoid of existence, We were free from the fear of non-existence. First, from non-existence You brought us into being, You bound us to the fetters of water and clay. You delivered us from the weakness of helplessness, You brought us from ignorance to knowledge. You sent us a luminous book, You addressed us with commands and prohibitions. We mixed the good and the bad together, Sometimes we exceeded, sometimes we fell short. We seldom walked the path of the commanded, We persisted in what was forbidden. Yet You did not turn away from the law of grace, You did not hide the light of guidance from us. Even if I assume there is no veil over that light from You, What benefit is it when there is no effort from us? We cry out in lamentation at our own lack of effort, Grant us the grace to strive so that we may strive. When the wise is drowned just like the ignorant, What difference is there between knowledge and ignorance? From the deceits of the discordant self, Do not make the path of good deeds narrow for us. In that constraint where it is only us and a sigh, Open a path of mercy toward us. From that path, summon us to Your court, And lead us out from here with faith as our companion.
