Economies of Scope in US Universities (1990-91)

A real-world example of economies of scope is found in a study of 171 U.S. public universities for the 1990–91 academic year. The research, conducted by economists Rajindar and Manjulika Koshal, analyzed the costs of educating different student populations. They concluded that universities operate more efficiently by jointly producing undergraduate education, graduate education, and research. The findings were published in a 1999 article titled ‘Economies of Scale and Scope in Higher Education: A Case of Comprehensive Universities’ in the 'Economics of Education Review'.
