A significant finding of the Ghent University Hospital’s review, was the notable lack of respiratory symptoms observed in MIS-C patients. In fact, a majority of cases presented with gastrointestinal symptoms rather than the typical respiratory phenotype characteristic of SARS-CoV-2. Considering the pathogenesis of the disease and the respiratory tract tropism characteristic of the virus, MIS-C predominantly affects the GI, cardiovascular and/or neurological organ systems.

Cardiovascular manifestations of MIS-C may require intensive care, resulting in a severe course of disease and significantly reducing mortality. Severe circulatory failure and myocardial inflammation places a substantial burden on the health of MIS-C patients and was present in all recorded deceased.
