Environmental and Health Consequences of Chlordecone Runoff

In Guadeloupe and Martinique, runoff of the pesticide chlordecone from banana plantations entered rivers and contaminated coastal waters. This pollution had devastating effects, poisoning freshwater prawn farms, mangrove swamps used for crab fishing, and coastal spiny lobster fisheries. Consequently, the economic livelihoods of local fishing communities were destroyed, and people who consumed the contaminated seafood suffered from illness.
