Regulatory Failure and Industry Influence in the Chlordecone Ban

The French government's management of the chlordecone situation illustrates a significant regulatory failure, exacerbated by private industry influence. The dangers of the pesticide were known long before its prohibition in the French West Indies; for instance, the United States banned it in 1976 after it caused neurological damage to workers. Despite receiving reports of contamination, French authorities only banned the substance in 1990 and then, under pressure from banana plantation owners, granted a special exemption that extended its use until 1993.
