Establishing Causality via Experiments

While correlational research is valuable for identifying relationships among variables, it cannot establish causality. To make definitive statements about cause and effect, researchers must conduct a scientific experiment. Experiments incorporate methods that eliminate or control for alternative explanations, allowing researchers to determine if changes in one manipulated variable directly cause changes in another measured variable.
