EU Inflation Rate and Targets (2009-2022) [Figure 1]

This line chart presents the European Union's inflation rate from 2009 to 2022, with the vertical axis ranging from -2.0% to 10.0%. The data reveals significant volatility: after an initial drop below 0% in early 2009, inflation rose to approximately 3% by late 2011, fell into negative territory again in late 2014, and recovered to around 2% by late 2018. Following a dip to -0.5% in late 2019, the rate surged, a trend exacerbated by the war in Ukraine, reaching a peak of over 9% in mid-2022. The chart features a solid line at the 2% inflation target, which was consistently above the actual inflation rate for most of the 2009-2021 period. Additionally, two dashed lines indicate the average inflation rates: 1.6% for 2009-2021 and 6.0% for 2021-2022.
