Case Study

Evaluating a Loan Proposal

An individual named Alex has 50 bushels of seed corn but is unable to work the fields. A neighbor, Ben, is a skilled farmer willing to work but has no seed. If the 50 bushels of seed are planted and cultivated, they will yield a harvest of 80 bushels. Without this arrangement, Alex's 50 bushels will remain in storage, and Ben will have no harvest. Alex proposes to lend the 50 bushels to Ben, on the condition that Ben repays 60 bushels after the harvest. Analyze this proposal. Is this loan mutually beneficial? Justify your answer by calculating the net gain for both Alex and Ben compared to their outcomes without the loan.
