Evaluating Competing Tenancy Contracts

A farmer's optimal work effort consistently yields a harvest of 20 bushels of grain. The farmer's choice of work hours and resulting harvest do not change based on fixed costs. The farmer receives two competing offers for renting the land:

  • Offer A: A fixed rent payment of 6 bushels of grain to the landowner.
  • Offer B: A fixed rent payment of 9 bushels of grain to the landowner, but this landowner will also provide the farmer with high-quality seeds, which would have otherwise cost the farmer 4 bushels of grain to purchase.

Evaluate both offers from the perspective of the farmer's final consumption. Which offer should the farmer choose to maximize their consumption, and why? Show your calculations for each offer to support your conclusion.
