Evaluating Peer Punishment in Cooperative Scenarios

In a repeated group project where each member's individual effort contributes to a final group reward shared equally by all, a common problem is the emergence of 'free-riders'—individuals who contribute little but still receive the full shared reward. A proposed solution is to allow group members to spend a small portion of their own reward to reduce the reward of others they identify as free-riders.

Critically evaluate this proposed punishment mechanism. In your evaluation, discuss its potential effectiveness in promoting sustained effort across the group, as well as at least one significant potential drawback or negative consequence of implementing such a system.
