Evaluating Strategies in a Cooperative Dilemma

Two roommates, Chris and Dana, agree to alternate cleaning their shared kitchen weekly. For three consecutive weeks, Dana fails to do her share. Chris is considering two responses:

  • Strategy 1: Stop cleaning on his turn and clearly communicate to Dana that he will only resume his duties after she completes a cleaning turn, thereby re-establishing the alternating pattern.
  • Strategy 2: Announce that the agreement is over, permanently take over all cleaning duties, and start charging Dana a non-negotiable weekly 'cleaning fee'.

Evaluate these two strategies. Which strategy is more likely to restore a cooperative, long-term relationship, and why? In your answer, explain how each strategy leverages the potential for future consequences to influence behavior.
