Evaluating the Pure Self-Interest Model in a Bargaining Scenario

Consider a one-shot interaction where one individual (the 'Proposer') is given $100 and must offer a portion to a second individual (the 'Responder'). If the Responder accepts, the money is split as proposed. If the Responder rejects, neither individual receives anything. A model based on pure self-interest predicts that the Responder will accept any offer greater than zero. However, experimental results frequently show Responders rejecting low offers (e.g., $10 out of $100). Critically evaluate the adequacy of the pure self-interest model in explaining the Responder's behavior in this scenario. In your evaluation, discuss alternative motivations that could account for the rejection of a low but positive offer.
