Example of a Mnemonic Device: Phil Dunphy's Method for Remembering Names
In the television show Modern Family, the character Phil Dunphy illustrates a mnemonic technique for remembering names by creating a chain of associations. To recall the name 'Carl,' he starts with an observation about the person—a Grateful Dead t-shirt. This triggers a series of connections: from the Grateful Dead to a similar band, Phish; from fish to their habitat, the ocean; and from the ocean to something found within it, coral. This sequence leads him to a sound-alike for the name: 'Co-arl' (Wrubel & Spiller, 2010).
