Example of a Secondary Reinforcer: Money
Money is a classic example of a secondary reinforcer because it lacks intrinsic value. Its reinforcing power comes from its ability to be exchanged for primary reinforcers, such as food and shelter, or other secondary reinforcers. The uselessness of money on a deserted island where it cannot be spent highlights that its value is learned and conditional, not innate.

A researcher is training a rat in a special cage. Each time the rat presses a lever, a light flashes, and then a food pellet is delivered. After many trials, the researcher observes that the rat will continue to press the lever for a short time if only the light flashes, even without the food pellet. Based on this learned behavior, how is the flashing light functioning in this experiment?
