Example of a Student's Attributions for Poor Midterm Exam Performance
Consider a student who performs poorly on a midterm exam and attributes this outcome to internal ('I am just not smart'), stable ('Nothing can be done to change the fact that I am not smart'), and global ('This is another example of how lousy I am at everything') causes. According to the reformulated learned helplessness model, such a combination of internal, stable, and global attributions leads the student to perceive a lack of control over the stressful event, making them especially vulnerable to developing depression.
