Example of Stimulus Discrimination: Tiger the Cat

A cat named Tiger demonstrates stimulus discrimination by distinguishing between the sound of a can opener, which predicts she will be fed, and the sound of an electric mixer. Because the mixer's sound is not associated with food, Tiger does not come running to the kitchen when it is on, showing she has learned to respond only to the specific stimulus linked to her meal.
