Expected vs. Unexpected Rewards' Effect on Intrinsic Motivation
An individual's expectation of receiving a reward is a critical factor in how it affects their intrinsic motivation. When a person anticipates an extrinsic reward for completing a task, their intrinsic motivation is likely to decrease. However, if the reward is given as a surprise with no prior expectation, the individual's intrinsic motivation for the activity tends to remain intact.
