Tangible vs. Intangible Rewards' Effect on Intrinsic Motivation

The impact of an external reward on intrinsic motivation often depends on its nature. Tangible rewards, such as money or physical prizes, are more likely to have a negative effect, potentially decreasing a person's inherent interest in a task. In contrast, intangible rewards, like verbal praise or recognition, tend to have a less detrimental, and sometimes even positive, effect on intrinsic motivation.
