Explaining Proposer Behavior in the Ultimatum Game

In a one-shot interaction where a Proposer offers a split of a sum of money to a Responder, a model based on pure self-interest predicts the Proposer will offer the smallest possible non-zero amount. However, experimental studies consistently show Proposers offering significantly more. Explain the primary reason for this discrepancy between the theoretical prediction and the observed behavior.
