Government Provision of Essential Goods and Services

Beyond establishing the legal and regulatory framework for a capitalist economy, governments directly supply certain essential goods and services. This intervention is often necessary for goods that the private market may underprovide or not provide at all due to their unique characteristics, such as being non-excludable or non-rivalrous. Common examples include national defense, public education, and physical infrastructure like roads and bridges.
