This paper discusses the findings of a study that compared elaborative learning to retrieving and reconstructing knowledge. They found that retrieval and reconstruction practices resulted in better comprehension and the development of inferences than elaborative learning.

Retrieval practice produces more learning than elaborative studying with concept mapping

(1) The entire linear text of the paragraph is shown inside the node rather than linking to a concept map for the paragraph.
(2) The layout is oriented left to right rather than top to bottom; once each node is expanded to include the entire paragraph of text, this adjustment leads to a better visual layout in most cases.
