Ice Cream Truck Example of Extinction
Extinction can be illustrated using the ice cream truck example when the truck runs out of ice cream. If the truck's music (conditioned stimulus) is repeatedly heard without getting the ice cream (unconditioned stimulus), the mouth watering (conditioned response) weakens and eventually stops.

Example of Classical Conditioning Processes: The Ice Cream Truck
For several months, a dog has learned to run to the kitchen and get excited whenever it hears the sound of a particular cabinet opening, because that is where its treats are stored. The owner then moves the treats to a different location and begins using the original cabinet only for storing dishes. What is the most likely outcome if the dog continues to hear the sound of the original cabinet opening but no longer receives a treat?
