Example of Classical Conditioning Processes: The Ice Cream Truck

A person's daily encounters with an ice cream truck can illustrate the key processes of classical conditioning. Initially, the truck's music is a neutral stimulus, while the taste of ice cream is an unconditioned stimulus that naturally causes the mouth to water (unconditioned response).

  1. Acquisition: After repeatedly hearing the music just before eating ice cream, the person learns the association, and their mouth begins to water (conditioned response) at the sound of the music alone (now a conditioned stimulus).
  2. Extinction: If the person then hears the music for several days but is unable to get ice cream, the conditioned response of salivating weakens and eventually stops.
  3. Spontaneous Recovery: Following a weekend break with no exposure to the truck, hearing the music again can cause the salivation response to reappear.
