Example of Extinction: Tiger the Cat
An example of extinction involves a cat named Tiger, who has been conditioned to associate the sound of an electric can opener (CS) with receiving food (UCS). If the owner begins to use the can opener exclusively for human food, Tiger will repeatedly hear the sound (CS) without the reward of her meal (UCS). Consequently, the conditioned connection will break, and her excited response to the can opener's sound will gradually fade away.

Example of Classical Conditioning Processes: The Ice Cream Truck
For several months, a dog has learned to run to the kitchen and get excited whenever it hears the sound of a particular cabinet opening, because that is where its treats are stored. The owner then moves the treats to a different location and begins using the original cabinet only for storing dishes. What is the most likely outcome if the dog continues to hear the sound of the original cabinet opening but no longer receives a treat?
