Concept
Implications for Evaluating Children with Parents of Chronic Illness
It is important to know that although a majority of children of parents with chronic illness may not exhibit serious clinical psychosocial symptoms, they may experience some difficulties in home life, friendship, classroom learning, and leisure activities. Therefore, when evaluating the functioning of a child who has an ill parent, it is imperative to assess children's distress and adjustment difficulties (i.e., peer relationship, learning, etc.), rather than simply focusing on clinical symptoms.
