Independence of Factors
A critical characteristic of factor analysis is that the identified factors do not function as mutually exclusive categories, but instead represent constructs that operate independently of one another. Consequently, an individual's measurement on one factor does not determine their measurement on a different factor. For example, a person who scores high on a factor representing extraversion could score either high or low on a separate conscientiousness factor.

Interpretation of Factors in Factor Analysis
When statistical procedures group clusters of highly correlated variables, what term describes the resulting foundational constructs that represent a single underlying measure?
During factor analysis, a 'factor' is defined as a single variable that does not correlate with any other measures in a study.

In factor analysis, which statement accurately describes the relationship between the identified factors?
Suppose a factor analysis of a personality questionnaire yields two factors: 'Adventurousness' and 'Caution'. If a participant scores extremely high on 'Adventurousness', the principle of factor independence requires that they must score low on 'Caution'.
