Influence of text structure and prior knowledge of the learner on reading comprehension, browsing and perceived control - Experimental Design
- Between-subject design to test for topology (hierarchical hypertext, mixed hypertext, linear text) and knowledge level (knowledgeable vs. nonknowledgeable)
- Participants given 40 minutes to read the passage
- Dependent variables: number of nodes opened for the 2 hypertext conditions, reading comprehension scores, perceived control
- Reading comprehension test was 16 multiple choice and 12 fill in the blank questions
- Perceived control is based on whether participants felt like they had the freedom to decide where in the structure to continue reading rather than having to follow a path that they cannot easy diverge from
- Perceived control questionnaire adopted from Becker and Dwyer’s 1994 study and contained 5 questions where participants rated based on a 5-point scale of strongly disagree (score of 1) to strongly agree (score of 5)
