- Half knowledgeable, half nonknowledgeable
- Knowledgeable meant the participants completed a prior class on productivity
- Converted the same text in Prokopenko’s 1987 study into the 3 conditions
- Passage about 5000 words and converted into 46 nodes 
- Hierarchical condition had 45 links
- Mixed hypertext condition had 45 hierarchical links and 15 cross-referential links
