Pettigrew and Tropp (2006) conducted a meta-analysis showing that contact between groups has a moderate but significant effect in reducing prejudice between those groups. The effect is enhanced when the two groups meet under conditions in which they have equal standing, common goals, cooperation between the groups, and especially support on the part of the institution or authorities for the contact.
