Interpreting Null Results with Manipulation Checks

When an experiment yields a null result—indicating no significant effect of the independent variable on the dependent variable—a manipulation check becomes essential. It helps researchers differentiate between two possibilities: either the independent variable genuinely has no effect on the dependent variable, or the experimental manipulation itself failed to alter the independent variable as intended.
