Inventory Consumes Working Capital

Inventory is not free cash on a shelf; it is money the contractor has already paid out and has not yet recovered through completed work. If purchases are larger than near-term demand, more cash is locked in stock and less is available for payroll, fuel, and other short-term bills. If purchases are too small, crews may stop and wait for parts, which delays jobs. Good inventory control means buying quantities that fit upcoming schedules and keeping only a small safety stock of fast-moving materials.
