Ja'far ibn Nusayr al-Khuldi defines tawakkul (trust in God) as istiwa al-qalb inda al-wujud wa-l-adam — the equanimity of the heart in the presence and the absence of provision. The trusting servant is neither gladdened when sustenance arrives nor grieved when it is withheld, because the body belongs to its Owner: God, its Master, has the greater right to nourish it or let it perish as He wills. The servant should not intrude into that disposition. This frames tawakkul as an inner steadiness of the heart rather than an outward abandonment of means, distinguishing the settled state of the heart from the changing fortunes of the body.
