English translation

And among them: the narrator of the states of the saints, with the gentlest words and manner, Abu Muhammad Ja'far ibn Nusayr al-Khuldi, may Allah be pleased with him. He was among the great and senior companions of Junayd. He was deeply versed in the branches of knowledge, a preserver of the sayings of the masters, and a guardian of their rights. His discourse is lofty in every branch, and for the abandonment of arrogance he tied every question to a tale and referred it to someone else. It is reported from him that he said: 'Trust in God (tawakkul) is the equanimity of the heart in the presence of both provision and its absence.' Trust in God is that the presence and absence of provision become equal in your heart: you do not rejoice at the presence of provision, nor grieve at its absence; because the body is the possession of its Owner, and God Most High has the greater right over its nurturing and its perishing, keeping it as He wills. Do not intrude in between; hand the possession over to its Owner, and cut off your own disposing of it. He relates: I came to Junayd and found him in a fever. I said: 'O master, pray that God Most High may send you healing.' He said: 'Last night I was saying this, and a call was made to my innermost being: The body is Our possession; if We will, We keep it sound; if We will, We make it sick. Who are you to intrude between Us and Our possession? Cut off your own disposing of it, that you may be a servant.' And God knows best what is correct.
