In Section 26 of Silsilat al-Dhahab (from Haft Awrang), Jami critiques Sufis who outwardly boast of practicing heart-remembrance (dhikr-e qalbi or dhikr-e khafi)—such as by closing their eyes, keeping silent, and pretending to be lost in the divine—while inwardly remaining preoccupied with worldly matters like family, wealth, and possessions.

Jami argues that for such individuals, loud remembrance (dhikr-e jahr or dhikr-e jali) is superior. In loud remembrance, the physical act of chanting guarantees that the remembrance is actually occurring, leaving no room for the internal hypocrisy and distraction that plague insincere silent remembrance.
