Jami's Metaphysical Interpretation of Paradise, the Heavens, and the Earth in Subhat al-Abrar
In Section 148 of Subhat al-Abrar (from Haft Awrang), Jami provides an Akbarian metaphysical commentary on the Quranic description of Paradise 'whose width is the heavens and the earth' (Quran 3:133). Jami identifies the 'Paradise of the Divine Essence' (jannat al-dhat) as the ultimate origin of all paradises. In this framework, the 'heavens' symbolize the Divine Names and Attributes (asma wa sifat) that govern existence, while the 'earth' represents the immutable essences (a'yan al-thabita) of potential beings. Before the divine self-manifestation (tajalli), all these names, attributes, and essences existed in a state of absolute undifferentiation, fully enfolded within the Divine Essence and His eternal Knowledge.
