Khosrow's Lamentation and the Metaphor of the Burnt Lover in Section 46 of the Khosrow Nameh
In Section 46 of the Khosrow Nameh, Farid al-Din Attar depicts Khosrow's intense grief upon the disappearance of Gol. Attar uses the classic Sufi and romantic metaphor of the burnt lover (sookhteh). Khosrow laments that his heart is filled with fire while his eyes are filled with tears, suggesting that the abundance of tears (water) has paradoxically prevented the fire from completely consuming him. He concludes that because he is already completely burnt by love, new fire or suffering can no longer affect him, reflecting the concept of emotional and spiritual desolation where a lover reaches a state of immunity to further pain.
