- A biological neural network, in theory, is an assemblage of structures that are able to regulate central nervous system automatisms with efficiency and pin-point accuracy.
- The concept of neural networks was originally coined in order to understand the construction of a neural circuit; it has since evolved to explaining circuitry functionality and interconnectedness with other networks and structures.

The Disgust Pathway

Limbic System

Positioned within the forebrain beneath the cerebral cortex, the thalamus functions as the brain's main sensory relay center. It routes incoming sensory signals from all senses—except for the sense of smell—to other processing regions of the brain.

The hypothalamus is a brain structure that regulates various homeostatic processes, including blood pressure, appetite, and body temperature. It serves as an interface between the nervous system and the endocrine system, and it controls the hormonal secretions of the pituitary gland. Furthermore, it is involved in regulating sexual behavior and motivation.

Hypothalamus

Situated at the base of the brain, the pituitary gland extends from the hypothalamus and operates in close conjunction with it. It is often called the 'master gland' because its messenger hormones regulate all other glands in the endocrine system, following directives from the hypothalamus. Additionally, it secretes growth hormone, endorphins for pain relief, and key hormones that regulate the body's fluid levels.

A patient is admitted to a neurological ward with a sudden onset of severe symptoms, including an inability to regulate their body temperature, extreme fluctuations in appetite, and a disrupted sleep-wake cycle.
