Limitations of Homophily
A significant drawback of homophily is its tendency to reduce exposure to diversity. When individuals primarily form relationships with those who are similar to themselves, they create homogenous social circles. This limits their interaction with people from different backgrounds and with varying points of view, including those of different races, ethnicities, socio-economic statuses, and life situations (McPherson et al., 2001).
