Louis Pasteur's 1858 Gun-Cotton Filter Experiment
In , the prominent French chemist Louis Pasteur filtered air through a gun-cotton filter. Upon microscopic examination of the cotton, he found it full of microorganisms. This experiment suggested that the exposure of a broth to air was not introducing a “life force” to the broth, but rather introducing airborne microorganisms, challenging the theory of spontaneous generation.
