In Attar's 'The Tale of the Madman' (حکایت مجنون), the 'majnun' (madman) character uses the metaphor of an old, wounded, and heavily burdened donkey to describe his own afflicted state. When asked about his miserable condition, he explains that if the donkey is temporarily relieved of its load, horseflies will attack its open wounds, making the brief respite a source of further agony. Through this striking imagery, Attar illustrates the relentless nature of severe affliction (kar oftadegi) and critiques those who live in luxury and comfort (kamrani) for their inability to comprehend true hardship.
