یکی پرسید از مجنون که چونی
که بس بیچارهٔ و بس زبونی

چنین گفت او که هستم من خری پیر
بدن سوراخ از بار گلوگیر

تنم گرچه نزار و ناتوانست
همه روزی همه بارش گرانست

وگر آسایشی را بعد صد غم
ز پشتش جامه برگیرند یک دم

هزاران خرمگس آید گزنده
همه در ریش او نیش اوفکنده

که گویم کاش این بیچاره هرگز
ندیدی از چنین آسایشی عز

اگر باشی تو کار افتادهٔ راه
چنین کارت بسی افتد باکراه

چو کار افتادگی نبود بغایت
ترا بس خنده آید زین حکایت

چو مشغولی بناز و کامرانی
تو کار افتادگی را می ندانی

کسی باید مرا افتاده در کار
بروزی ماتم خود کرده صد بار

بحق زنده شده وز خویش مرده
نه از پس ماندگان کز پیش مرده

تو تا عاشق نگردی نیک جانباز
نیابی سر کار افتادگان باز

کسی کو در میان ناز ماندست
ز جان بازان عاشق باز ماندست

English translation

Someone asked Majnun, "How are you? For you are so helpless and so miserable." He replied, "I am an old donkey, My body pierced by a choking load. Although my body is frail and weak, Every day its burden is heavy. And if, for the sake of comfort after a hundred sorrows, They lift the covering from its back for a moment, Thousands of biting horseflies come, All sinking their stingers into its wounds, Such that I say, 'I wish this poor creature Had never seen the honor of such comfort.' If you are an afflicted traveler on the path, Such affairs will often befall you against your will. Since your affliction is not extreme, You will only laugh at this tale. Since you are occupied with luxury and pleasure, You do not know the meaning of affliction. I need someone who is afflicted in this work, Who has mourned themselves a hundred times a day, Alive through the Truth and dead to themselves, Not among the stragglers, but among those who died ahead. Until you become a true, life-risking lover, You will not discover the secret of the afflicted. Whoever remains amidst luxury, Remains far behind the life-risking lovers."
